About this Piece
The kidney-shaped Cocktail Table is the most distilled mid-century piece in the Relic Modern™ collection — a curved silhouette lifted straight from the postwar design canon, rendered in walnut or maple on a 13-layer Baltic birch body. The exposed layered Baltic birch edges on the sides read as a signature detail and make every piece one-of-a-kind. The lower shelf adds storage without breaking the organic line of the top, and the piece stays light enough (25 lbs) to move between a living room, family room, den, or lounge as the space asks for it. At 48" long, it reads as a coffee table or a cocktail table depending on how the room is styled around it.
The shape was drawn organically — pencil on paper, no software — and the smooth curves feel like something seen in nature before they feel like a designed object. That's the mid-century move: the result looks accidental and fully intentional at the same time. In the postwar era, this form was commonly called a kidney coffee table or kidney cocktail table, and the vocabulary has stuck.
The curved top sits above a lower shelf sized for books, a stack of magazines, or a tray. The Tray from the decor collection is made in the same curved vocabulary and sits on the top surface like it was drawn for it. Bringing the piece together are three legs in Baltic birch and either walnut or maple, designed to give a geometric juxtaposition to the otherwise soft shape.
Offered in walnut or maple — a matter of preference, not function. Both faces are on the same 13-layer Baltic birch body. Finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend, the piece has a matte, warm look that enhances the natural grain of the walnut or maple.

Real Furniture,Made by Real Hands
I build every piece by hand in my Minneapolis workshop — one maker, one standard, no shortcuts. While big-box stores fill warehouses with particle board and mass-produced templates, Relic Modern™ starts with real, high-quality wood and ends with something built to last. Some things are worth buying from a real person.
Mid-century modern isn't a trend — it's a discipline. Clean lines, reasonable proportions, and modest, organic shapes. At Relic Modern™, that means stripping every design down to its essential form and building it from high-quality Baltic birch with walnut or maple faces, finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend that lets the wood speak for itself.
