Lead Times

The truth is, good furniture takes time.

Every Relic Modern™  piece is built by me, start to finish, in my Minneapolis studio — no warehouse, no assembly line. I select and mill the lumber, join, sand, and finish each piece by hand. That care takes time, but it's also why the wait exists: it's the difference between something pulled off a shelf and something built for you, by hand, meant to last generations.

About this Piece

The Clock is a statement made through restraint — a substantial walnut face with off-center hands and softly curved corners. A gentle round-over lets the face transition into the layered Baltic birch sides without a hard edge anywhere on the form. Glossy white metal hands sit against the rich matte walnut, driven by a silent movement with no ticking. A repositionable inset hanger gives four hanging orientations — vertical with hands at top or bottom, horizontal with hands at left or right — so the piece works on whichever wall it lands on. Quiet on a busy wall, sculptural on a bare one.

The body is 1¼" Baltic birch with 24 layers at the edge and a recess on the back, so the mounting hardware sits inside the body and the piece hangs flush against the wall. The silent quartz movement keeps the piece quiet in bedrooms, nurseries, and offices — no second-hand tick, no audible mechanism.

At home in a living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom, office, den, or entryway. Pairs naturally with the Edge of the Horizon and The Dot wall art pieces.

Finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend, the piece has a matte, warm look that enhances the natural grain of the walnut.

Materials

Built from a 1¼" Baltic birch body — a single 13-layer ¾" sheet with a second ½" sheet laminated around the back perimeter, totaling 24 layers at the edge. The buildup creates a recess on the back that lets the mounting hardware sit inside the body, so the piece hangs flush against the wall. The walnut face is set into the front, and the layered Baltic birch edges are left exposed as a signature detail.

Product FAQ

(01) How long does shipping take? This piece is made in batches and ready to ship from Minneapolis. Current lead time is listed in the box above the Add to Cart button. See Shipping, Pickup & Returns for details.

(02) Will the wood color change over time? Yes. The walnut face will deepen and take on warmer, reddish tones over the first year or two. This is a natural characteristic of the species and part of what makes the piece feel alive. The hand-rubbed oil and wax finish supports this patina rather than sealing it off.

(03) How do I care for this piece? A damp cloth is all that’s needed for cleaning — no furniture polishes. The piece can be refreshed with a bit of furniture wax when it feels dry. Additional details are on the FAQ page.

(04) Does the clock make any sound? No. The Clock uses a silent quartz movement with a continuous sweep second hand — no ticking, no audible mechanism at conversation distance. It works in bedrooms, nurseries, offices, and other quiet spaces without the second-hand tick that most wall clocks produce.

(05) Is assembly required? The clock hands arrive packaged separately and snap into place — hour hand first, minute hand next, second hand last. Step-by-step instructions are included in the package. A second sawtooth hanger ships loose; swap it in if you’d like the clock to hang in a different orientation than the pre-installed one.

(06) Does this require batteries? The movement runs on one AA battery, which is not included.

At Relic Modern™, that means stripping every design down to its essential form and building it from high-quality Baltic birch with walnut or maple faces, finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend that lets the wood speak for itself.
