Lead Times

The truth is, good furniture takes time.

Every Relic Modern™  piece is built by me, start to finish, in my Minneapolis studio — no warehouse, no assembly line. I select and mill the lumber, join, sand, and finish each piece by hand. That care takes time, but it's also why the wait exists: it's the difference between something pulled off a shelf and something built for you, by hand, meant to last generations.

About this Piece

Simple and artful, this entryway bench is designed to wow guests with complexity and restraint. A signature Relic Modern™ piece, it is built from a time-intensive lamination process that turns nearly 300 layers of solid Baltic birch into the visible face of the bench. What reads from across the room as clean, minimalist mid-century form reveals, up close, the striped layered edges that define the collection. The reduced silhouette suits a foyer, entryway, hallway, mudroom, living room, bedroom, or dining room — or the end of a bed as a footboard bench.

Finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend, the piece has a matte, warm look that enhances the natural grain of the edge-grain Baltic birch.

Materials

Built from 13-layer solid wood Baltic birch, laminated and stacked so nearly 300 layers run the full length of the bench. The stack is cut into narrow strips and rotated 90°, bringing the layered edges to the surface as the visible face. A custom edge-grain edging wraps the front and back so the striped layers read seamlessly across every face.

(01) Wood: Edge-grain Baltic birch — nearly 300 layers of solid birch, laminated, cut, and rotated so the layered edges form the visible face. Custom edge-grain edging on the front and back faces to maintain the layered look across the full piece.

(02) Finish: Pure tung oil, boiled linseed oil, beeswax, carnauba wax — a durable, water-resistant matte finish that feels like silky-smooth wood.

Product FAQ

(01) Can I see a wood sample before ordering? Yes. A wood sample of the Baltic birch with the chosen face — edge-grain Baltic birch — and the oil and wax finish is available through the shop.

(02) How long until the piece ships? This piece is handmade to order in Minneapolis. Current lead time is listed in the box above the Add to Cart button. See Shipping, Pickup & Returns for details.

(03) How do I care for this piece? Use coasters, wipe up spills, and keep rough objects off the surface. A damp cloth is all that’s needed for cleaning — no furniture polishes. The piece can be refreshed with a bit of furniture wax when it feels dry. Additional details are on the FAQ page.

(04) Does this require assembly? No. The piece arrives ready to use upon delivery or pickup.

(05) Can this piece be customized? Please reach out before ordering to discuss customization options.

(06) Edge Grain Baltic Birch: Baltic birch is a high-quality, all-hardwood material — sustainable, stable, and distinctive in appearance. Each ¾" sheet contains 15 thinly sliced layers of solid birch.

On most Relic Modern pieces, the exposed layered edges of a single sheet become a signature detail. On this Entryway Bench, the technique goes further. Multiple sheets are glued and stacked together, multiplying the layer count. The stack is then cut into narrow strips and rotated 90°, turning the layered edges into the full visible face of the bench — nearly 300 layers of solid birch running the length of the piece.

To maintain the layered look across every face, a custom edge-grain edging — a thin strip of the same rotated stack — is laminated onto the front and back. The result reads as a single, seamless piece of layered birch, no matter the angle.

Inspired by mid-century style, rendered modern, minimalist, and deliberate.

(08) Can I see this piece in person? Yes. The Entryway Bench is on display at the Minneapolis showroom, alongside the full furniture collection. See showroom hours or book an appointment.

Real Furniture,Made by Real Hands

I build every piece by hand in my Minneapolis workshop — one maker, one standard, no shortcuts. While big-box stores fill warehouses with particle board and mass-produced templates, Relic Modern™ starts with real, high-quality wood and ends with something built to last. Some things are worth buying from a real person.

Mid-century modern isn't a trend — it's a discipline. Clean lines, reasonable proportions, and modest, organic shapes. At Relic Modern™, that means stripping every design down to its essential form and building it from high-quality Baltic birch with walnut or maple faces, finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend that lets the wood speak for itself.
