Lead Times

The truth is, good furniture takes time.

Every Relic Modern™  piece is built by me, start to finish, in my Minneapolis studio — no warehouse, no assembly line. I select and mill the lumber, join, sand, and finish each piece by hand. That care takes time, but it's also why the wait exists: it's the difference between something pulled off a shelf and something built for you, by hand, meant to last generations.

About this Piece

Layered Baltic birch legs lift the Sideboard's 78-inch form off the floor, carrying the same exposed-edge material language from the case all the way down to the ground. Three dovetailed maple drawers with soft-close Blum® slides handle everyday essentials; two sliding doors reveal adjustable shelves for dishes, barware, linens, or whatever needs tucking away. Handcrafted from 13-layer Baltic birch with a walnut or maple face, the piece works as dining room buffet, a storage cabinet, a credenza behind a sofa, or an entryway anchor. Looking for something smaller? The Media Console No. 1 and Media Console No. 2 share the same material language in more compact footprints.

The legs are the piece's quiet signature. Rather than applied or turned legs, each leg extends the Baltic birch side panel downward in a layered lamination — the same material language as the body, continued through to the floor. Paired with the exposed layered Baltic birch edges on the case, the effect reads as a single piece of architecture, with a nod to the mid-century designers who first worked in engineered materials. It's a signature Relic Modern™ detail.

Finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend, the piece has a matte look that enhances the natural grain of the walnut or maple.

Materials

Built from 13-layer solid wood Baltic birch with a walnut or maple face — a stable, sustainable core that doesn't move with the seasons the way solid wood can. The layered Baltic birch edges are left exposed as a signature detail and a nod to the designers of the mid-century era. Handmade in Minneapolis.

(01) Wood: 13-layer Baltic birch with walnut or maple face

(02) Drawer: solid maple, dovetailed, on soft-close under-mount Blum® slides with six-way adjustments

(03) Hardware: Italian-made satin-gold drawer pull.

(04) Finish: pure tung oil, boiled linseed oil, beeswax, carnauba wax — a durable, water-resistant matte finish that feels like silky-smooth wood

Product FAQ

(01) How long until the piece ships? This piece is handmade to order in Minneapolis. Current lead time is listed in the box above the Add to Cart button. See Shipping, Pickup & Returns for details.

(02) Will the wood color change over time? Yes. The walnut face will deepen and take on warmer, reddish tones over the first year or two, and the maple face will warm into a deeper honey color — both are natural characteristics of the species and part of what makes the piece feel alive. The hand-rubbed oil and wax finish supports this patina rather than sealing it off.

(03) How do I care for this piece? Use coasters, wipe up spills, and keep rough objects off the surface. A damp cloth is all that's needed for cleaning — no furniture polishes. The piece can be refreshed with a bit of furniture wax when it feels dry. Additional details are on the FAQ page.

(04) Can I see a wood sample before ordering? Yes. A wood sample of the Baltic birch with the chosen face — walnut or maple — and the oil and wax finish is available through the shop.

(05) Does this require assembly? No. The Sideboard ships fully assembled and is ready to use on delivery or pickup.

(06) Can I customize this piece? Yes — depth, hardware, and some other modifications are available on request. Reach out before ordering to discuss options.

(07) Can I see this piece in person? Yes. The Sideboard is on display at the Minneapolis showroom, alongside the full furniture collection. See showroom hours or book an appointment.

Mid-century modern isn't a trend — it's a discipline. Clean lines, reasonable proportions, and modest, organic shapes. At Relic Modern™, that means stripping every design down to its essential form and building it from high-quality Baltic birch with walnut or maple faces, finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend that lets the wood speak for itself.
